B’nai Avraham is a modern orthodox congregation, celebrating 18 years of community service and occupying its current brownstone for the last decade. The spiritual leader is Rabbi Aaron Raskin. Several other rabbis are also on staff. There is no full-time cantor as the members of the synagogue themselves take turns volunteering for this role.
On any Sabbath or weekday morning you will see different members leading the services and Torah readings.
The membership demographic is typical for Brooklyn Heights: predominantly young (20’s-40’s), overly educated, intellectually curious professional men and women. Many members were raised in non-orthodox homes, but everyone is welcome here. Members include lawyers, doctors, teachers and computer jocks.
Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Avraham
The Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Avraham strives to maintain a warm and inviting atmosphere among the women of our community by working together to encourage everyone’s involvement in Jewish life.
Our fund raising events provide Shabbat meals for families with newborns and for those who are ill, welcome packages for new members and help to support renovations of our synagogue.
We have regularly scheduled meetings over brunch in each other’s homes, planning events for the synagogue as well as programs geared towards women in the Jewish community. Some of our many programs include or have included:
- a Chanukah party
- a Senior Outreach Program
- a monthly women’s Rosh Chodesh group.
- a Sukkah Hop
- an annual Apple Picking event
We are always looking for new ideas and new members to become involved. Membership cost is only $54. For more information, please contact our President, Susan Elhadad, at cba-sisterhood@hotmail.com or call (718) 596-4840 x13.
